Which Material Is Best for Bedding?

There’s no single “best” bedding material, it all comes down to personal preference and what feels best for you. At Piglet in Bed, we offer high-quality 100% linen, 100% cotton, and our signature linen-cotton blend, each with its own unique benefits.

Benefits of 100% Linen Bedding

Naturally breathable and temperature-regulating, linen keeps you cool in summer and warm in winter. It softens beautifully over time and is one of the most sustainable fabrics available. It also has a lovely, relaxed look and feel that gets better with age, making it ideal for a laid-back bedroom aesthetic.

Benefits of 100% Cotton Bedding

Crisp, smooth, and ultra-soft, cotton bedding is a classic choice for those who prefer a lighter, more structured feel. Our cotton bedding collection is made from 100% cotton, which has been responsibly sourced in partnership with the Better Cotton Initiative, the world’s leading sustainability initiative for cotton, meaning you can rest easy.

Benefits of Linen-Cotton Blend Bedding

Our signature blend combines the best of both worlds - linen’s relaxed texture with cotton’s softness - for a versatile, easy-care option. It’s perfect for those who love the look of linen but want the smoothness of cotton, with minimal upkeep required.

Linen vs Cotton: Which Should You Choose?

Still torn between the two? Here’s a quick guide to help you compare them and find the right fit for your sleep style.

Softness:

Cotton has a smooth, gentle feel from the first sleep; perfect if you love that freshly made bed feeling. Linen has a naturally textured finish that softens beautifully over time, gaining character and comfort with every wash.

Temperature regulation:

Both cotton and linen are breathable and great at keeping you comfortable year-round. Linen has excellent thermoregulating qualities, while cotton feels cool and crisp, which is especially lovely in warmer months.

Best for sensitive skin:

Both materials are made from natural fibers, but linen is naturally hypoallergenic and antibacterial, making it a great choice for those with sensitive skin. That said, high-quality cotton is soft and gentle too, which is ideal for anyone who wants a silky-smooth sleep!

Durability:

Linen is incredibly durable and designed to last for years, becoming softer and more lived-in with time. Cotton is also a long-lasting choice when cared for properly. Our percale cotton is woven for strength and longevity, even after regular washing.

Care:

Cotton is easy to care for and has a slightly 'cleaner' look - ideal if you prefer a crisp, hotel-style look. Linen requires a little less upkeep, and its relaxed texture means it looks great straight from the line or tumble dryer.

Style preference:

Linen lends itself to a more laid-back, effortless bedroom look, while cotton offers a cleaner, more classic aesthetic. Both layer beautifully with our colours and patterns, so it really depends on the mood you want to create.

Is a Higher Thread Count Better?

Not necessarily! While many assume that a higher thread count means better quality, this isn’t always the case. In fact, overly high thread counts can make sheets less breathable. Instead, the type of fabric and the way it’s woven are much better indicators of quality.

Our cotton bedding features a percale weave, known for its crisp, cool feel and matte finish, resulting in a beautifully breathable and durable bedding option.

How should I care for my bedding?

For most of our bedding, we recommend washing at 40C to keep them fresh while maintaining the fabric. However, always check the care label for specific guidance. For a more detailed guide on keeping your sheets in top condition, read our full care guide. We recommend skipping fabric conditioner as it can coat fibres and reduce breathability. Line drying is best where possible, but tumble drying on a low heat also works well too.

Your Common Bedding Questions, Answered

Flat vs Fitted Sheets

This comes down to personal preference. Fitted sheets have elasticated corners for a snug fit and less hassle when making the bed, while flat sheets offer more versatility. Some people prefer to use them as an extra layer in warmer months or as a duvet alternative in summer.

How Do I Know What Size Bedding I Need?

If you bought your mattress in the UK and are purchasing bedding from a UK brand, the sizes should match. However, if you’re shopping internationally, be sure to check the size guide, as standard measurements vary in Europe, the US, and Australia. You can find our detailed size guide on each product page, and our full size guide here

Should I Upsize My Duvet?

Many people opt for a super king duvet on a king-sized bed for extra coverage and a more luxurious feel. It’s a great way to reduce nighttime tug-of-war and create a hotel-like look for your bedroom.

Do You Need a Separate Duvet for Summer and Winter?

If you live somewhere with distinct seasons, having a lighter summer duvet and a thicker winter one can be a game-changer. Alternatively, you could opt for an all-season duvet or layer up with blankets for added warmth in colder months.

Our merino wool duvets are a great all-rounder. They help regulate your temperature naturally, keeping you cool in the summer and cozy in the winter. The wool is breathable, draws moisture away from the body, and it’s hypoallergenic. Plus, it’s ethically sourced and wrapped in a soft cotton cover for extra comfort.

Choosing the right bedding can make all the difference in your sleep quality and comfort. Whether you prefer breathable linen, smooth cotton, or a balanced blend, at Piglet in Bed we’ve thoughtfully designed options to suit every kind of sleeper!
