Making sure you have the right sized bedding for your bed is essential to a good night’s sleep. If you have ever tried to stretch a fitted sheet over a mattress that is too big for it, you will also know that it’s essential to your sanity. Read on to make sure you have the right dimensions for that perfect fit on twin, full, queen beds and more.
How do I know my bed sheet size?
The best way to make sure your bedding and bed sheets fit your bed is to measure your mattress. Most mattresses will come in four standard sizes, as listed below. If your mattress is non-standard, then size up to the next largest bedding size. For example, if your twin bed is wider than a standard twin bed (such as a three quarter bed, a twin XL or a small double), then go for a full-sized bedding set. For some it’s a matter of personal preference: if you are a duvet-hogger you might want a queen-size bedding bundle for that extra coverage.
Common bed sizes in the United States:
- Twin beds: a standard twin bed measures 3ft 3in x 6ft 3in (39 x 75in). Used for people to sleep in alone, these beds are great for smaller rooms where more space is needed and are commonly used for children’s rooms and bunk beds.
- Full beds: a standard full bed is 4ft 6in x 6ft 3in (54x 75in) and can also be referred to as a double bed in many places.
- Queen beds: this is the most popular mattress size in the United States and great for those who want that extra bit of room. The queen size bed measures 5ft x 6ft 8in (60 x 80in).
- King beds: for ultimate star-fishing, this bed is 6ft 4in x 6ft 8in (76 x 80in) and is a great size for those with room to spare in the bedroom or who simply like to stretch out at night.
- California King beds: the absolute peak of mattress luxury and perfect for family cuddles in the morning, the California King measures a whopping 6ft x 7ft (72 x 84in).
How do I know what sheets will fit my existing duvet?
Most duvets will show their size on the care label, so check that first. If not, simply measure your duvet against the sizes in our table below and choose the right duvet cover for you.
What do I need to furnish my bed?
In general, lots of households have moved away from the more traditional bedding of sheets, blankets, comforters and quilts and now opt for duvets set and duvet covers. For each bed, we generally advise the following:
- One fitted sheet, to ensure it never slips off or bunches up in the night. Our fitted sheets are made with deep corners, to fit even the tallest mattresses.
- One flat sheet, great for optional lighter coverage in the warmer months.
- 2-4 pillowcases: be sure to check whether your pillows are standard, queen or king-sized, based on the measurements in the table below.
- One duvet cover - at Piglet in Bed, we love to mix and match our colorways from our full range of linen bedding.
