Cotton Bedding: Your Questions Answered

Soft, durable and effortlessly timeless, cotton bedding is a trusted favorite for good reason. Yet, with so many different types, technical terms and care tips to consider, it’s easy to get lost in the details. But don’t fret, we’re here to make sense of it all. From demystifying thread counts to exploring sustainability credentials and sharing the definitive way to wash your cotton bedding, we’re answering the most common questions so you can rest easy.

Which Bedding Material is Best?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to the best bedding material – it all comes down to what’s right for you. Generally, breathable, naturally thermoregulating fabrics that prevent overheating and feel good against your skin are a great place to start. If you’re unsure which material fits your needs, check out our Bedding Fabric Buying Guide for helpful tips.

Why Cotton Bedding?

What makes cotton bedding so popular? It’s loved for its breathability, softness and durability – qualities that keep you comfortable all year round. While cotton is the most common bedding material, not all cotton sheets are created equal. Factors like thread quality, ply (how many single threads are twisted together) and weave type all influence the feel. And then there’s the often-confusing topic of thread count to consider.

Is a Higher Thread Count Better?

Thread count refers to the number of threads in a square inch of fabric, but higher isn’t always better. For cotton bedding, 200 to 400 is the sweet spot, balancing breathability, softness and durability.

More important than thread count is thread quality. Single-ply, long-staple cotton creates a stronger, smoother fabric than multi-ply threads, which some brands use to inflate thread counts artificially. For instance, a two-ply 300-thread-count sheet might be marketed as 600 but is weaker and more prone to bobbling. At Piglet in Bed, we focus on quality, using 200-thread-count long-staple cotton for lasting comfort.

What is Percale Cotton Bedding?

After you’ve unravelled the mysteries of thread count, the next step is understanding the weave – the way threads are woven together to create the finished material. At Piglet in Bed, we use a percale weave, a classic criss-cross pattern (one thread over, one thread under) that creates a lightweight fabric with a cool, crisp feel. Percale cotton (or cotton percale, as it is also known) differs from cotton sateen, which is more densely woven and has a silky sheen.

What is Washed Cotton Bedding?

Washed cotton goes through an additional washing process to achieve a softer, more relaxed texture right from the start. With its matte finish and lived-in look, washed cotton is perfect for those who prefer a laid-back, casual bedding style.

What Sustainability Certificates Should You Look For?

When choosing cotton products, keep an eye out for certifications like Better Cotton, the world’s leading sustainability initiative for cotton, and OEKO-TEX, which guarantees items haven’t been made using harmful chemicals. For organic cotton, look for the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), which verifies that the production process is environmentally and socially responsible.

What is the Best Temperature to Wash Cotton Sheets?

For most of our bedding, including our 100% cotton sheets, we recommend washing on a warm cycle to keep your bedding fresh without compromising the fabric, but always check the care label for specifics. Skip fabric conditioner – it can coat fibers and reduce breathability. Line dry or tumble dry on a low heat. For more tips, check out our complete Care Guide.

We hope this Q&A makes your search for the perfect bedding that little bit easier,  giving you the insights to pick sheets that look and feel beautiful and are designed to stand the test of time, too.
