Everything you need to know about caring for your jute rug.
Jute is a wonderful material and is classified as an eco-fibre. Not only is it grown and made sustainably (and looks great!), it is also very hard-wearing. Pretty ideal qualities for a rug! We want this rug to be in your life for a long time, looking its best, so please read on to find out how to care, clean and generally nurture your jute rug (don’t worry, they mostly take care of themselves).
General Care:
- Use an anti-slip underlay for extra softness and to minimise movement and slippage.
- Please be aware that all our rugs are individually woven and each piece is unique. As such, there might be some variation in colour and your rug might not exactly match the images displayed.
- Use furniture pads under heavy furniture to prevent the flattening of the rug’s pile.
- The tassels on your rug may not lie flat on arrival, having been rolled up in the rug during transit. Comb them through with your fingers and weight down if needed for a short time. Alternatively they will flatten by themselves in time.
- Where possible, do not place furniture with rollers and castors on your rug as this can create indentations.
- Remember to rotate your rug often to distribute wear evenly.
- Avoid direct placement in sun or unfiltered light to limit fading.
- Keep your rug away from damp areas.
- If any loose yarn appears, please use scissors to trim or remove them, do not pull at any loose threads.
Vacuuming Your Rug:
- As will all new rugs, there might be some shedding to begin with. Shedding is a natural characteristic of jute rugs and will ease over time.
- If and when the shedding does occur, you can either shake the rug outdoors or vacuum using suction only.
Rug Storage:
- If you do need to store your rug for a period of time, bear in mind that the longer they are stored increases the likelihood of it losing its shape or damage occurring.
- Always ensure your rug is clean and dry before storing.
- Store your rug rolled up with the top facing inwards.
- Wrap the rug in plastic or an old sheet to protect against dust and dirt.
- Lay your rug flat (not standing up) in a cool, dry place.
Spots and Spills:
- Treat spills promptly by spot cleaning with a dry cloth such as kitchen/paper towel to soak up excess liquid.
- Be aware that a spillage on the rug may result in the natural jute colour seeping into the floor below so remove that area from the surface of the floor until dry.
- Do not use soap, bleach or cleaning products as these may damage your rug.
- Do not rub or scrub your rug vigorously, work inwards from the edge of the mark to the centre.
- We recommend an annual professional cleaning, if desired.
